ETOSHA IS POPULAR FOR ITS WILDLIFE

Etosha National Park is a national park located in the northwestern of Namibia. It was declared a game reserve in March 1907 in Ordinance 88 by the Governor of German South West Africa, Dr. Friedrich von Lindequist. It was named as Wildschutzgebiet in 1958, and was raised to the status of a national park in 1967. It spans an area of 22,270 km2 (8,600 sq mi) and obtain its name from the large Etosha pan which is almost entirely within the park. The Etosha pan (4,760 km2 (1,840 sq mi)) covers 23% of the total area of the National Park. The park is home to lots of species of birds, mammals and reptiles, including several threatened and endangered species such as the black rhinoceros. The park is situated in the Kunene region and it shares boundaries with the regions of Oshana, Oshikoto and Otjozondjupa.

Since Etosha National Park is the entrance to Northern Namibia and Ovamboland, it’s a very popular stop on any Namibian tour. It is better known as Namibia’s foremost wildlife sancuary.

The landscape is special and varied and home to a wide variety of animals. For example lion, leopard, hyena, cheetah, giraffe, elephant, springbok, two kinds of zebra, eland and many more species of wildlife are found here.

WHAT DOES ”ETOSHA” MEAN?

Etosha means the ”great white area” which refers to as the huge salt pan. This is an impressive sight because it’s one of the biggest salt pan in Africa.

Subsequently, when it rains, the water pools in the pan attracts hundreds of thousands of flamingos!

What makes this park unique is the floodlit waterholes at all the main camps. Some of the camps have photography hides which is close to the waterholes. Certainly, Etosha National Park is any photographer or nature lover’s dream. Most of the lodges have private decks or verandas to see the pristine landscape.
