Sani Pass is one of Southern Africa’s most breathtaking routes, winding through the Drakensberg Mountains and connecting KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa to the Kingdom of Lesotho. The journey up the pass is an experience on its own, steep, rocky, and full of sharp bends that open up to sweeping mountain views that feel almost unreal.

The Sani Pass begins in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, close to the small town of Underberg, and climbs steeply through the Drakensberg Mountains until it reaches the border of Lesotho. Although the winding road lies entirely within South Africa, it leads directly to the Lesotho border post at the top, opening into the country’s highlands in the Mokhotlong District. This makes the pass not just a mountain route but also a symbolic bridge between two worlds , South Africa’s rolling valleys below and Lesotho’s rugged, elevated beauty above.

The higher you go, the air gets colder and cleaner, and the scenery turns wilder. Only 4×4 vehicles are allowed on the road because of its rough terrain and unpredictable weather, which can shift from sunshine to mist or even snow within minutes. For adventurers, photographers, and nature lovers, it’s a dream route that challenges and rewards at the same time.

At the top sits the Sani Mountain Lodge, famously known for having the highest pub in Africa. It’s the perfect spot to take a break, enjoy a warm drink, and take in the vast, peaceful view stretching across Lesotho’s highlands.

Long before it became a travel destination, the pass was used by Basotho traders who carried wool and mohair down to South Africa and brought back goods like maize meal and sugar. Today, it still serves as a link between both countries and stands as a reminder of the rugged beauty and spirit of Southern Africa.
