In the eastern Free State of South Africa lies Golden Gate Highlands National Park, a striking landscape where rolling grasslands meet towering sandstone cliffs and rugged mountains. The park takes its name from the warm golden glow that illuminates its sandstone formations, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
Beyond its distinctive cliffs, the park forms part of the Maloti Mountains, giving the landscape a dramatic backdrop of high peaks, valleys and open grasslands. As the light moves across the mountains, the colours of the sandstone shift from soft yellow to deeper shades of orange and red, adding to the area’s unique character.
These landscapes are also home to a variety of wildlife. Zebra, eland, blesbok and black wildebeest can be found across the grasslands, while the mountains and cliffs provide shelter for numerous bird species.
But Golden Gate Highlands is not only a place of natural beauty. Scattered among its caves and rock shelters are San rock paintings, offering glimpses into the long human history of the region and adding another layer of meaning to its dramatic surroundings.
Together, its golden cliffs, mountain valleys, wildlife and ancient rock art make Golden Gate Highlands one of South Africa’s most distinctive inland landscapes.
